Emails show Chicago coordination after shooting
As protests in Chicago continue against gun violence and police shootings, the city has released emails about the 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald, the black teenager shot 16 times by a white police officer. A folded three-inch pen knife was found on his body. It does not mention the forced resignation of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, the murder charge against Van Dyke nor various federal and local investigations, but it does include several “major reforms” that were announced earlier this week.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel spokesman Adam Collins also sent emails that went to the review board and others.
While the mayor denied seeing the damning footage before its release – a claim challenged by campaigners – the correspondence from Mr Collins shows that his department was already concerned about its effect. In one email, an Emanuel spokesman told an IPRA spokesman to “tread lightly” when handling an interview request.
And in the same month Mr Collins complained to colleagues that the IPRA did not follow his recommendation on how to respond to a TV station about Mr McDonald.
“Days before the video’s release, Collins wrote to police and law department representatives urging them to speak with “one voice” on the topic”.
Emanuel and Chicago police have been under heavy scrutiny since the city, under court order, released the squad-car video. “But the bad, and the issues that have come up, specifically in the last two months of the year, we have to focus on as well, and we have to work on correcting some of those issues and addressing those issues and answering those questions that a lot of people have asked of us”. He suggested in an October 11 email that officials would be “smart to act timely and strategically” in both cases. “It is absolutely critical in this case, as in all police-involved shootings, for the investigative agency to get it right so that justice can be served”.
LeGrier and Jones, 55, were shot and killed by an officer who was responding to a domestic disturbance call LeGrier’s father made at the apartment building he owns last weekend.
