Embrace the Darkness – New Dark Souls III Trailer!

In a bid to take advantage of the increasing popularity of mobile games and in order to attract new players, Bandai Namco has partnered with GameStop and released a brand new mobile version of the popular “Dark Souls” franchise. The game is only “inspired by” the Dark Souls series, as it doesn’t contain a direct connection to the PC and console titles. You can roll, wield different weapons and magic, and fight enemies and bosses (you can see Gravelord Nito and the giant boar in the trailer) translated from the games. The similarities begin and end with the medieval gothic aesthetics and the same focus on challenging, Dark Souls-esque gameplay. “Slashy Souls” is a role-playing game spin-off of “Dark Souls” and is available on mobile devices, ready for download on iOS and Android.

The game has a mediocre 2.5 rating on Google Play Store, and has been described as “sloppily done” and its combat as “mindless and boring”. The site also names GameStop as the publisher, although most other sources seem to credit Bandai Namco. What makes this game stand out is the challenges it presents the players and letting them learn from their past mistakes. Personally, I’m glad the developers didn’t try to shoehorn Dark Souls on mobile and decided instead to go with a genre that works well on phones and tablets. Controls are horrid. This “game” doesn’t deserve to share anything with dark souls.
