A fish and wildlife spokesman says a woman hiking in the backcountry west of Calgary was bitten in the arm by a grizzly bear this morning.

A woman is recovering in hospital after reportedly being attacked by a grizzly bear.

Richard Blair Coleman says his son, aged 25, saw the bear chasing a man and a woman near a river as he was driving on a road above.

Cochrane RCMP said police were responding to a report about a possible bear mauling near the Trappers Hill Campground, northwest of Waiparous Village, but could offer little other information right away.

“I don’t think there’s a lot of guys out there that would run down the hill to a bear and two cubs…and scare something like that off, but he did a job”, he said.

The woman was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.

Wiebe said being aware and prepared is the key to staying safe outdoors.

Fish and Wildlife officers closed the nearby road and moved campers out of the affected area.

“They want to get a sense of the bear’s behaviour and whether or not it was acting really aggressively or whether it was a natural reaction to an unusual situation”.
