‘Take shelter in a building and actively defend it. Shelter before the fire arrives as radiant heat can kill you well before the flames reach you.

The SA Country Fire Service said the Pinery fire as extremely risky and issued emergency warnings for Pinery, Owen, Hamley Bridge, Freeling, Greenock, Kapunda, Tanunda and Tarlee, Kapunda, Greenock and Nuriootpa just after 4pm, saying there is a risk to lives and property.

Leave now if the path is clear to a safe place. Scores of homes have been lost after fires tore through entire towns.

If the building catches on fire and the conditions inside become unbearable, leave to an area already burnt.

Earlier in the day the CFS advised that a fire at Buckingham was causing smoke to be visible in the Buckingham, Mundulla, Bordertown, Cannawigara, Wirrega and Lowan Vale Areas, and the Dukes Highway between Bordertown and Keith.

They were among 95 firefighters and 40 fire units, including water bombing aircraft, which were deployed to the region.

Just after 3.30pm, the SA Country Fire Service confirmed two firefighters had been flown to hospital with serious burns. The blaze ripped through around 200 hectares of paddocks and stubble near Mintaro.

Residents and firefighters have been injured and properties damaged in the blaze near Pinery as it heads towards Mallala and Roseworthy, north of Adelaide, where a strike team has been sent to battle the inferno. Deputy chief officer Brenton Eden said it was unlikely fire crews would be able to bring the fire under control within the next few hours and their efforts would depend on more favourable weather conditions.

A damaging-wind warning has been issued for a large section of the state, including the area where the fire is burning.
