Emily Blunt faces tough questions as FBI agent in thriller ‘Sicario’
“Sicario”, which combines dizzying action scenes with a taut script, ravishing photography and an otherwordly musical score, is a knockout film from Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve, who propelled himself into the front rank of directors with the harrowing 2013 kidnapping drama “Prisoners“. New comments from Del Toro, however, have called that assessment into question, though he is seemingly contradicting previous statements that he himself made. Emily said during her interview with Indiewire that they were most probably considered for the Captain Marvel role because of their ability to wield a gun or do push-ups. Told she’ll be flying to El Paso, Kate is instead taken to Juárez, just across the border, for a highly dangerous extraction mission-just the first of numerous lies that Matt and his mysterious, unaffiliated associate, Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), will blithely toss at their new recruit, when they bother to brief her at all.

One significant line in the beginning of the film is del Toro’s, “Nothing will make sense to your American ears”, implying an idea that is somewhat scary yet interesting.
On the other hand, The Concourse defined the film as a horror movie.
As predicted, she has doubts, and raises questions; early on, her challenges are handled with a simplicity that borders on clumsiness, as an argument with Brolin is carefully framed to include an American flag flapping overhead. By the end, her choice has become starkly binary: play ball or commit suicide. The actress says the character “would just have to be a great part”. But if we must make ourselves monsters to catch him, what then?
“I think it’s because the list is very short, because we don’t see women in these kind of roles”. It’s a picture that grabs your innards, and squeezes. “She was really happy that it all happened the way it did”. Wouldn’t she figure this thing out before she does?
Fine points all, to which I’d only respond thus: You’d think she would, but she doesn’t, because she is us.
