Dubai International is the world’s busiest airport and more than 20 outgoing flights had to be cancelled because of the crash, Emirates said. The airline reported 226 people from India, 24 from the UK, 11 from the United Arab Emirates, six from the USA and two from Australia among the 282 passengers and 18 crew on board.
According to the Dubai Media Office, all flights departing from Dubai International Airport have been delayed until further notice, after an Emirates plane reportedly crash landed on the runway.
Video posted online shows black smoke billowing from what looked like an Emirates jetliner lying on its belly on the runway.
The Boeing B 777-300 plane which was involved in the accident was 13 years old.
The spokesperson added that they were working with the immigration department and Dubai Police to assist passengers with issues relating to visa expiries and lost passports.
Planemaker Boeing said in a statement it was monitoring the situation in Dubai and it would be working with Emirates to gather more information.
