Will HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” repeat for best drama and best comedy?
And her Game of Thrones colleague Ronan Hill, from Ballycastle, was part of a team who won a gong for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama series for their work on the HBO show. Not sure anything can stop this series, even a fire-breathing dragon.
But Sunday’s glitzy ceremony in downtown Los Angeles – television’s equivalent of the Oscars, when the Emmys in top categories are handed out – could see it pass the 37 won by long-running sitcom “Frasier”.
Others in the bleachers came prepared with umbrellas, books and snacks while waiting for things to get going. The clever series, a political satire starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a US vice president-turned-head honcho, scored 17 nominations and is particularly top of mind given the current state of American politics and an election year. It’s a favorite of the TV Academy, and its viewers are still laughing.
“I can’t wait to get into the air conditioning, said Quantico star Priyanka Chopra during the ABC red carpet special”.
Actor, Drama Series: Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot“. Here’s hoping it happens. The Emmys can’t keep rewarding House of Cards when it keeps getting worse (right?), so that takes Kevin Spacey out of the running. And not just one Emmy nomination, but four – including Outstanding Comedy and Comedy Actor. In terms of the major awards, Courtney B. Vance beat co-star Cuba Gooding Jr.to take home the statue for lead actor, while Sarah Paulson finally won her first Emmy for her portrayal of Marcia Clark. Also vying for the statuette are Keri Russell for “The Americans“, Robin Wright of “House of Cards”, Tatiana Maslany for “Orphan Black” and Claire Danes of “Homeland“. It’s her turn. Hand over that trophy. Indian-American Aziz Ansari also is nominated for his new Netflix comedy “Master of None”. His poignant performances in this family drama are truly addictive. Tambor’s main competition could be from Anthony Anderson in Black-ish.
But the Simpson case was the biggest of them all, says Nunan, combining celebrity, murder, race and wall-to-wall TV coverage in one of the biggest reality spectacles in history.
Who will win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”.
Five of the seven nominees this year were up for the award last year. She is well-loved, gets better in the role every year and will make history as the most awarded lead comedy actress in the history of the Emmys if she wins. And “for your consideration” mailers have reached comical proportions, with Netflix sending out a package to Emmy voters so hefty that it could crush a toe.
