Emmy Awards show draws smallest audience on record

An emotional Davis, who won for her portrayal of a ruthless lawyer in How to Get Away With Murder, invoked the words and spirit of 19th-century African-American abolitionist Harriet Tubman.

Louis-Dreyfus cracked a joke about Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump in her acceptance speech, saying “it’s getting trickier and trickier to satirise this stuff”.

“The only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity”, Davis said. The Emmy wins should help HBO solidify its position as the first stop for Hollywood producers and writers pitching their projects – and it could also entice consumers to sign up for HBO Now, the $14.99-a-month standalone streaming service.

Jon Hamm finally snared an Emmy for his lead role as Don Draper in the now-finished Mad Men, winning a standing ovation from the audience.

It was also a good night for retiring fake-newsman Jon Stewart, whose “The Daily Show” won Emmys for best variety talk series and for its director, Chuck O’Neill.

The cast of HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones had plenty to celebrate, including their first ever win in the best drama series category.

Bradley Whitford received a guest-actor trophy for his cross-dressing “Transparent” character at the creative arts Emmys last weekend.

Though it seems counter-intuitive to keep score at an event where “it’s an honor just to be nominated”, HBO was the runaway victor of the 67 annual Primetime Emmys with 43 awards. Sitcom Frasier remains the overall victor with 37 awards.

“It’s the first time in a very long time that a big, popular show won best drama series”, Lombardo said. A smiling Martin was in the theater audience to accept the congratulations, and was onstage for the big win.

HBO’s Veep ended the five-year Emmy reign of ABC’s Modern Family as best comedy series.

“I have been off of television for six weeks, seven weeks, whatever it is”.

Actor Jeffrey Tambor won best actor in a comedy for Amazon’s groundbreaking “Transparent“, about a middle-aged dad who transitions to life as a woman.

“I’d like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community….”

Another much-honored actress, Allison Janney, won a supporting trophy for playing the title character in the CBS comedy, “Mom“.

Emmys voters didn’t give up their fondness for choosing the familiar over the groundbreaking.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honoured as best lead comedy actress for Veep for the fourth time. On Sunday, it also won awards for writing, directing and for supporting actor Peter Dinklage.

“There’s been a mistake, clearly”, Hamm said, giving credit to his fellow nominees.

HBO’s Olive Kitteridge won all the prizes in the “limited series” (mini-series) category. Did the voting block award the series for its previous success, reminded by this year of how great the show once was and hoping it won’t get worse?
