Emmy Awards unrolls record-long red carpet

LOS ANGELES (AP) – What do computer hackers, the divisive US presidential campaign and racial tensions have to do with the Emmys?

Popular TV host Jimmy Kimmel, who will host the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony here on Sunday, says that whenever he steps out of his studio for hosting another event, it makes him nervous.

Host Jimmy Kimmel opened Sunday’s show with a string of jokes about Republican presidential contender and former “Celebrity Apprentice” host Donald Trump, and former football star O.J. Simpson, whose 1995 double murder trial and acquittal was dramatized in “The People v. O.J. Simpson”, which is expected to be a big victor on Sunday.

The show, which follows the ever-expanding battle for the Iron Throne to rule over the Seven Kingdoms based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire”, is nominated again for the best drama series Emmy award, which it won for the first time previous year for its fifth season.

In this image released by HBO, Lena Headey appears in a scene from “Game of Thrones”. It can claim both momentum, with this year’s Golden Globe for best drama series in hand, and thematic timeliness.

You also can be fairly certain that Emmy voters will be tripping over themselves to honor FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”.

“I think that “Veep” has torn down the wall between comedy and politics”, she said.

Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, teased that the upcoming season 7 would be “unbelievable” and would leave fans “really satisfied”. That includes a record quarter of the acting nominations going to people of color, after Viola Davis’ groundbreaking 2015 win for “How to Get Away With Murder”. The hit fantasy drama might seem like a dead cert, but there are a lot of wild cards in this case: The Americans, long overlooked by awards, is a ripper of a show, and Mr Robot is one of the buzziest shows on TV, off the back of a smash hit first season. “The award has continued to lose its influence on TV viewers with less than one in 10 Americans being more inclined to watch a series because it has won an Emmy”. The show also won the best drama award a year ago. However, Saturday Night Live earned 15 nominations as well.

The ceremony started out with a political edge. “The reason we have the longest red carpet in history, and that is pretty exciting, it’s because this is going to be the longest Emmy show in history”, Kimmel joked.

Directing, Comedy Series: Jill Soloway, “Transparent”.

It is not a coincidence that, given the fracturing of the traditional television landscape, the majority of nominations honor non-broadcast network programming. Acting victor Vance, who sweetly thanked his wife onstage, said he’s ready to hand over his trophy to her.

Elsewhere, Rami Malek, 35, who is of Egyptian descent, is a front-runner for his first Emmy for his lead role as a socially awkward computer hacker in USA Network’s “Mr. Robot”.

Should win: Louie Anderson, “Baskets”.

Biting political satire “Veep” is seeking its second consecutive best comedy series award, and bleak political drama “House of Cards” is looking for its first major win, as are its stars, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. That sharpened the selection process and might affect past winners who managed to collect enough second-place votes to overcome the competition.
