Emmy nominations 2016: ‘Game of Thrones’ ruling the nomination list
On Thursday, HBO’s epic fantasy drama received a staggering total of 23 nominations, just one short of its 24 nominations from previous year. It was also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series in 2015. Peter Dinklage, honored as last year’s best supporting actor, will defend his title, with a nod also going to Kit Harington as fan favorite Jon Snow.

FX adds many more nominations with “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson”.
In addition, Martindale got another nomination (her fourth for this guest role) while executive producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields got a best-writing nod. Besides, writers David Benioff and DB Weiss were also nominated.
A handful of new Game of Thrones faces have been added into the nomination pool this year.
Game of Thrones’s haul includes best drama series and supporting actor noms for two-time Emmy victor Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey.
Meanwhile, Dame Maggie Smith is up for best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Downton Abbey.
The other category announced Thursday morning was outstanding variety talk series; Jerry Seinfeld’s web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee; Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Real Time with Bill Maher, The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Beyonce is a variety special nominee for HBO’s Lemonade.
Beyonce earned two nominations, as an executive producer and co-director of HBO’s Lemonade, while Adele earned a nomination as executive producer of NBC’s Adele Live In New York City.
“Game of Thrones” and “Veep” are among the top contenders for the 68th Primetime Emmy nominations. Cumberbatch also was nominated for an Oscar in 2015 for “The Imitation Game”. But there were no major nods for the stars of Fresh Off the Boat or other Asian-American actors, or for Latinos, which has been a recurrent Emmy pattern. “I could not be more humbled”, said Harington, as quoted by EW.
“It’s good for British actors at the minute”.
Game of Thrones will compete in a seven-way race for best drama with Showtime’s Central Intelligence Agency thriller Homeland, FX’s Cold War espionage saga The Americans, AMC’s quirky legal story Better Call Saul, the final season of PBS’s period melodrama Downton Abbey, Netflix’s political mystery House of Cards, and USA Network’s new computer-hacking tale Mr. Robot.
The actresses nominated for best actress in a drama series are “House of Cards” actress Robin Wright, “The Americans” actress Keri Russell, “Orphan Black” actress Tatiana Maslany, “Empire” actress Taraji P. Henson, “How to Get Away With Murder” actress Viola Davis, and “Homeland” actress Claire Danes.
Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (Masterpiece) and Luther are nominated for outstanding television movie.
