But finally the Academy has stumbled across “The Americans” and its two splendid leads, handing a nomination to the series as well as to Matthew Rhys as best lead actor and Keri Russell as best lead actress (the first-ever nominations for both these veteran stars).
The contenders for best actor in a comedy series are “Transparent” actor Jeffrey Tambor, “Silicon Valley” actor Thomas Middleditch, “Shameless” actor William H. Macy, “Last Man on Earth” actor Will Forte, “Master of None” actor Aziz Ansari, and “Black-ish” actor Anthony Anderson.
“Black-ish” faces last year’s victor “Veep” and its star Julia Louis Dreyfus.
Among the nominations on Thursday for Downton Abbey was best drama series and a best supporting actress nomination for Dame Maggie Smith.
Five-time best comedy victor “Modern Family” was once again nominated.
The FX crime drama Fargo, loosely based on Joel and Ethan Coen’s motion picture of the same name, was the third-most nominated production, with 18 nominations, including a bid for best limited series and a nod for Kirsten Dunst as best actress in that category.
Supporting Actor, Drama Series: Jonathan Banks, “Better Call Saul”; Ben Mendelsohn, “Bloodline”; Peter Dinklage, “Game of Thrones”; Kit Harington, “Game of Thrones”; Michael Kelly, “House of Cards”; Jon Voight, “Ray Donovan”. The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
The topic of race figured heavily in the limited series category – formerly known as “outstanding miniseries” – with The People v OJ Simpson matched up with historical saga Roots and ABC America’s American Crime. Such was the case in 2002, when FX became the first basic cable channel to win a top Emmy Award – Michael Chiklis’ best drama actor trophy for “The Shield” – and earned unprecedented cachet.
Idris Elba for “Luther”, Benedict Cumberbatch for “Sherlock” and Tom Hiddleston for “The Night Manager” have received nods in the outstanding lead actor list.
Lead nominations went to Cuba Gooding Jr.as Simpson, Courtney B. Vance as defense attorney Johnnie Cochran and Sarah Paulson as prosecutor Marcia Clark.
Meanwhile, Dame Maggie Smith is up for best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Downton Abbey.
