Emmy nominations leave major networks as odd men out
Breakthrough nominations include a best comedy series nod for sophomore black-ish, which brought the blacks family sitcom back to network TV, and also got bids for its stars, Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross. It seems clear now that Emmy voters simply like other drama series more, and it will be interesting to see if the more critically acclaimed fourth season gets any love next year, when it will be eligible. So was Empire star Taraji P. Henson. The groundbreaking transgender-themed comedy “Transparent” is its Emmy standard-bearer with 10 nominations, including best comedy series and best lead actor, Jeffrey Tambor, who won the trophy past year.

Veep, the U.S. version of The Thick Of It, earned 17 nominations including best comedy series, best lead actress in a comedy series for its star Julia-Louis Dreyfuss and outstanding direction in a comedy series for British comedian Chris Addison.
Julianna Margulies, star of “The Good Wife”, has already won two Emmys for her portrayal of Alicia Florrick.
The nominees for best comedy series are: “black-ish”; “Master Of None”; “Modern Family”; “Silicon Valley”; “Transparent”; “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”; “Veep”.
Outstanding Drama Series: “Better Call Saul”, “Downton Abbey”, “Game of Thrones”, “Homeland, “House of Cards”, “Mr. Robot”, “The Americans”.
Actor, Drama Series: Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”; Kyle Chandler, “Bloodline”; Kevin Spacey, “House of Cards”; Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot”; Liev Schreiber, “Ray Donovan”; Matthew Rhys, “The Americans”.
Kit Harington and Peter Dinklage are nominated for best supporting actor in a drama series, while Maisie Williams and Emilia Clarke are nominated for best supporting actress in a drama series.
“Black-ish” star Anderson, who got his second nod, will be competing with last year’s victor, Jeffrey Tambor of “Transparent”, along with Ansari, Will Forte for “The Last Man on Earth”, William H. Macy for “Shameless” and Thomas Middleditch for “Silicon Valley”.
And speaking of nice surprises, I’m glad Louie Anderson got nominated for the otherwise forgettable Baskets.
Supporting Actress, Comedy Series: Niecy Nash, “Getting On”; Allison Janney, “Mom”; Kate McKinnon, “Saturday Night Live”; Judith Light, “Transparent”; Gaby Hoffmann, “Transparent”; Anna Chlumsky “Veep”.
David Schwimmer, who played Simpson’s lawyer and friend Robert Kardashian, John Travolta, who portrayed defence lawyer Robert Shapiro, and Sterling K Brown, who played prosecutor Christopher Darden, are also nominated for best supporting actor in a limited series.
Paulson’s rivals are Kirsten Dunst for “Fargo”, Felicity Huffman and Lili Taylor for “American Crime“, Audra McDonald as Billie Holiday for “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill” and Kerry Washington as Anita Hill in “Confirmation”.
Hiddleston is nominated for his role in the popular BBC series The Night Manager, while his co-stars Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman earned nods in the supporting role categories.
