Emmy Nominations: Redemption for Some, A Cold Shoulder for Others
However, with several of its most beloved shows now retired (Mad Men, Parks and Recreation) or on a break (Louie), this year’s nominations have thrown up a few new faces to go alongside all the regular ones. Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, which was nominated first as a comedy and then as a drama in past years, didn’t get a drama nom this time around, and none of its stars – not even two-time victor Uzo Aduba – were recognized.

NBC also secured two digital nominations for “Jay Leno’s Garage” in Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series and “Saturday Night Live Interactive Experience” in Outstanding Interactive Program. The acclaimed Bloodline got two acting nominations-Kyle Chandler (lead actor) and Ben Mendelsohn (supporting actor)-just a day after Netflix renewed the family drama for a third season.
Amazon’s Transparent, meanwhile, nabbed 10 nods for production design, casting, series, costumes, directing, lead actor (Jeffrey Tambor), supporting actress (Judith Light and Gaby Hoffmann), and guest star (Bradley Whitford and Melora Hardin). For my work on “Game Of Thrones” to be recognized in this way is an emotional moment for me.
“Game of Thrones” stars Kit Harrington, Maisie Williams and Lena Headey are thrilled to have garnered individual nominations at the Emmy Awards where the HBO show bagged maximum 23 nominations. Better Call Saul, Mr. Robot, Homeland, House of Cards, The Americans, are all competing with “Downton Abbey“, which is in its final season.
Five-time best comedy victor Modern Family was once again nominated – it is now tied with Frasier for the show with the most titles in the category.
A top acting nod for “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays a US vice-president now elevated to the Oval Office, gives her the chance to score her fifth consecutive win and set a record.
Gooding and Vance will compete with Bryan Cranston as President Lyndon B. Johnson in “All The Way”, Benedict Cumberbatch in “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (Masterpiece)”, Idris Elba in “Luther” and Tom Hiddleston in “The Night Manager“.
Some key nominees in the six lead performer categories are either first-time nominees, or familiar names with multiple nominations.
FX trailed HBO with 56 nominations, with series like The People v OJ Simpson, American Crime Story and Fargo included in its tally.
But Emmy voters appear to have ignored his failure to truly inhabit the role of O.J. Simpson and have given him a surprise Lead Actor in a Limited Series nod alongside his co-star and potential victor Courtney B. Vance.
“I jumped up and down. more about that than about my own”, Paulson said.
