Emmy preview: Can ‘Game of Thrones’ repeat?

Several hotly tipped shows are conspicuous for their poor showing this year, including CBS’s The Good Wife, which was shut out of best drama honors although it has a nomination for writing. If you haven’t watched the show already, you better get on that, because it’s sure to take home a few awards this weekend.

That nod went to Taraji P. Henson in the best actress in a drama category for her portrayal of family matriarch Cookie Lyon.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, “Veep”, and “Silicon Valley” air in the spring, while USA’s “Mr. Robot” rebooted in July, and while season two episodes of Amazon’s “Transparent” premiered last December, the third season will be available September 23. He is followed closely by Master of None’s Anziz Ansari (+250) and Anthony Anderson (+400) of Black-ish.

Washington D.C. [USA], Sept. 17 (ANI): With nearly same number of Emmy nominations this year, TV series ‘ Game of Thrones’ and “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” are equally vying to bag enough to secure the reign of “Outstanding Series” title for the coming year. The premium cable network’s two biggest contenders, fantasy drama series Game of Thrones and political comedy Veep, are both expected to dominate the awards table again this year.

Sehdev headed a two-year study ending last week that surveyed 2,000 Americans and found 87 per cent believed the Emmys were less significant than the Oscars, while nearly three-quarters said they were not “overly excited” by the Emmys show. Other first-time nominees include Tom Hiddleston in The Night Manager, Ellie Kemper in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Cuba Gooding Jr.in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and James Corden in The Late Late Show with James Corden. She has already received the coveted prize five other times. Keegan-Michael Key from Key & Peele could be this year’s victor.

The favored Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy will be Allison Janney in Mom. Anna Chlumsky from Veep is a strong nominee as well.

“Saturday Night Live” takes the trophy (or rather, trophies) for the most wins for any primetime television series in history, garnering a whopping 44 trophies over the past four decades.

Two more Emmy nomination categories will be enticing to watch in 2016.

20th Century Fox Inc. -owned FOXA, +0.25% FOX, -0.16% FX Networks was the network with the second-highest number of nominations, pulling in 56, led by its breakout limited series “The People v. O.J. Simpson: An American Crime Story”. “Fargo aired a while ago and was not airing while Emmy voting was happening, but it still got 18 nominations”.

For Television Movie Emmy nominations, Confirmation, based on Anita Hill and the hearing of Supreme Court Justice nominee Clarence Thomas, was a critical hit.

Since becoming eligible to appear on the Emmy ballot in 2013, Netflix has gathered a total of 117 nominations overall.
