Emmys 2016: What Time Do the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Start?

Note: Because of a delay in premiering its seventh season, Game of Thrones is out of the running for next year’s Emmys. It will be broadcast on ABC on Sunday, September 18, starting at 7 p.m. Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting. With a total of 22 nominations, the first season of the show examined the historic murder trial involving football legend O.J. Simpson, who was deemed not guilty of killing his wife amidst a controversial trial.

Actor Peter Dinklage, victor of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “Game of Thrones”, poses in the press room at the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 20, 2015 in Los Angeles, California. Could Mr. Robot – a psychological whirlwind of a show – blow the collective minds of the academy? That’s especially true in a category like best actor in a TV movie or limited series, where Cuba Gooding Jr., Idris Elba and Courtney B. Vance are grouped with Bryan Cranston, the likely favorite for his portrayal of President Johnson in HBO’s “All the Way”. It looks to be an absolute lock, although Fargo (+200) and American Crime (+600) were also able to turn some heads and garner a few other major nominations in the process.

“Game of Thrones” also should add to its Emmy totals with wins for supporting actor in a drama (either Kit Harrington or previous victor Peter Dinklage) and supporting actress (Lena Headey).

Another show that probably deserves to be mentioned is Silicon Valley, the up-and-coming tech comedy HBO series that has just earned itself 11 Emmy nominations, an improvement from the respectable seven bids from a year ago.

The Emmy awards celebrate the year’s biggest achievements in television, and this year’s nominees could not be more varied.

Let’s take a look at the shows slated to dominate this year’s Emmy awards.

Michael Smith-a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and co-author of the new book Streaming, Sharing, Stealing: Big Data and the Future of Entertainment-thinks Netflix’s contributions are notable regardless of how many statuettes it takes home. HBO’s John Adams mini-series now holds that record at 13, but Game of Thrones has already nabbed 9 Creative Arts Emmys.

Nominees: Anthony Anderson, black-ish; Aziz Ansari, Master of None; Will Forte, The Last Man on Earth; William H. Macy, Shameless; Thomas Middleditch, Silicon Valley; Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent. The interesting thing though is that Julia has won all the four previous awards in this category. Don’t be surprised if the 41-year old from Cardiff upsets the competition. Small blue-ribbon judging panels gave way to the group’s 20,000 members voting on key winners, rendering the awards more democratic.

The show has also won three consecutive nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series as well as Outstanding Directing. A dark horse nomination pick could be Fargo.

However, the biggest victor could be FX’s “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”.

Hiddleston will bring the evening to a close, taking the stage to announce the best drama series. But the second season, about a 1970s gangland war in the Upper Midwest – yah! – was every bit as wonderfully odd yet shockingly violent as its predecessor, which won the Emmy in 2014.
