Emmys Awards 2016: Game of Thrones breaks record

They accounted for four of the 27 awards, and only one for a prime-time scripted series.

Emmy recognition can help bring in bigger audiences, and more advertising dollars, at networks like FX that run commercials.

Other trophies were sprinkled among USA, BBC America, AMC and Comedy Central – a stark illustration of the changing nature of television.

The suddenly turning serious, the former Seinfeld star broke down as she ended her speech by dedicating the award to her father, who passed away on Friday.

“I think there’s great stuff on network, on streaming, on cable”, “Master of None” co-creator Alan Yang said backstage.

The HBO fantasy drama triumphed in 12 categories, including outstanding drama series, taking its all-time Emmy total to 38.

Maggie Smith, who had won three Emmys for playing the snarky and witty Dowager Countess on “Downton Abbey” – and been nominated for six more – won again in absentia for the final season of the PBS series.

“Transparent’s” Emily Robinson stepped out in a pair of gold strappy heels to go with her strapless gold tulle dress from the Carolina Herrera Resort Collection, with inside-out seams and a tiered ruffle skirt with hand-stitched gold sequins at the hem.

Golden Globe-winning Mr. Robot, a conspiracy thriller about a troubled hacker, is vying for the top drama series award and best actor honours for star Rami Malek.

“If you’re a person of colour in our audience this year please find a white person – it shouldn’t be hard – reach out and say thanks for your bravery”. And, thankfully, the upwards trend of actors and creatives making impassioned and powerful speeches at awards shows continues.

Femininity was on display at Sunday’s 68th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, where celebs showed off their softer side with embellishments, yards of voluminous fabric and glimpses of skin at the waist.

Jeffrey Tambor won best lead actor in a comedy series for his role in the Amazon series Transparent and urged the TV industry to provide more opportunities for transgender actors.

“Hollywood is doing good, but I’ll tell you women of color are doing even better”, nominee Viola Davis said on the red carpet.

“Our show started out as political satire but now it feels like a sober documentary”, Louise-Dreyfus said.

Given the ongoing and contentious presidential campaign, Kimmel will likely bring some political humor to the stage.

Host Jimmy Kimmel starting things off during his opening monologue by asking, “If it wasn’t for television, would Donald Trump be running for president?” Burnett cast Trump in the series “The Apprentice”, which broadened the NY businessman’s appeal.

“Saturday Night Live” comedian Kate McKinnon, who plays Democratic U.S. presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, won supporting comedy actress, while Louie Anderson was named best supporting actor for playing the wholesome mother of Zach Galifianakis’ quirky clown in the FX comedy “Baskets”.

“What a night for O.J.”, Kimmel said as the Simpson miniseries earned five trophies Sunday. “I just wanted to see what you guys would do”.

Finally, before the showrunner Ryan Murphy collected the award for Best Limited Series, Extremely Handsome Human Man Sterling K. Brown snatched the best supporting actor gong from expected champion David Schwimmer.

“I’m so glad that he liked “Veep” because his opinion was the one that really mattered”, she said.

“The Emmys are so diverse this year the Oscars are now telling people we’re one of their closest friends”. But then Matt Damon came out for a lengthy bit with longtime late-night nemesis Kimmel, a bit that both could have been trimmed, but also presumably would have been completely different if Kimmel hadn’t lost in the variety talk category. He told reporters later that he had been excited about seeing a seating chart where he was going to sit two rows behind Beyonce. “So, this is nice, but this evening genuinely has a sense of loss”.

Technically, Dame Maggie was a victor; she won an award for her supporting role on “Downton Abbey”. As has become her custom, she didn’t attend the ceremony.
