Emmys: ‘Game of Thrones’ Wins Best Drama Series

The blood-spattered, sex-filled saga about noble families vying for control of the Iron Throne took home the most coveted prize of the night, the best drama Emmy, along with statuettes for writing and directing.

Additionally, Emmys results show Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele, Joe Earle, Anthony Hemingway, Jaqueline Glover, Paul Tazewell, RuPaul and Keith David all won Emmys for categories including sketch comedy series, producing, costume design, narration and hosting.

Louie Anderson won for playing a woman on Baskets, while Jeffrey Tambor won best actor yet again for playing a transgender woman on Transparent, using the opportunity to encourage the television industry to cast more transgender actors, a sentiment actress Laverne Cox later seconded. He plays a transgender woman on the Amazon series.

Louis-Dreyfus used her victory at the Jimmy Kimmel-hosted ceremony, which was witnessed several starts making sharp political jabs, to take a dig at GOP contender Donald Trump. Kimmel joked of the latter: “I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes when Kanye realizes they beat Beyoncé!”.

John Oliver captured the best variety talk series award for “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”, besting competitors including Jerry Seinfeld and host Jimmy Kimmel – who received barbed consolation on stage from Matt Damon, his longtime faux nemesis. “No, no, no, no, no”, Kimmel said. She played Marcia Clark in FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, a series that garnered 22 nominations and nine wins. Burnett, when accepting the award for best reality show, responded by joking that Kimmel and ABC had just given Trump five more minutes of free TV time.

Quick on his feet, Oliver roasted the reporter, saying: “Thank you, yes, it was an honor to win”, Oliver said.

“If your show doesn’t have a dragon or a white Bronco in it, go home right now”, host Jimmy Kimmel joked at the start of the three-hour broadcast, a reference to “Thrones” and the infamous vehicle Simpson was in when he went on a wild ride through Los Angeles before his arrest.

Downton Abbey actress Dame Maggie stayed away from the Los Angeles ceremony but won a best supporting actress gong for her role as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the hit period drama. Two critical darlings earned major hardware, with surprise wins for Mr. Robot’s Malek and Orphan Black’s Maslany for outstanding lead actor and actress in a drama series, respectively.

“We’re not mailing this to her”, Kimmel joked.

Kimmel was also the butt of a bit.

Damon showed up to taunt him over his loss. “He’s a big loser…how about a round of applause for the big loser”.

Leslie Jones also provided some comic relief during the usually staid portion of the show when viewers meet the accountants responsible for keeping the results a secret. (And who could be cruel enough to object, after she revealed that her father died Friday?) That was followed by another repeat victor, Jeffrey Tambor forTransparent, but in his case any other result would have been a miscarriage of justice.

“Put [her Twitter account] in your vault please,”Jones said”. You all are over here using your skills to protect best voiceover in a French sitcom.

Streaming services did well right out of the gate.

Alan Yang and Aziz Ansari won for outstanding writing in a comedy series for Master of None, which stars Anzari. “After five episodes airing, they made a decision to keep us for another year”, Anderson said backstage. But even when she’s used to getting up on stage to receive an Emmy, the comedienne was still emotional.
