He also thanked everyone for their support after raising more than £1million for Sport Relief – which helps support disadvantaged people in the United Kingdom and across the world.

Izzard ran to honor Nelson Mandela, who served 27 years in prison, and to raise money for Sports Relief charity.

He completed his 707 mile challenge with his final at the foot of a statue of South African leader and President Nelson Mandela.

“It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done”, Izzard told the BBC, moments after finishing the final steps of the race. “So thank you for everyone who’s donated”.

After catching his breath, he marked the huge achievement by cracking open a bottle of sparkling wine, which he drank straight from the bottle, according to the BBC.

He first attempted the South Africa run in 2012 but had to end it after four marathons due to the kidney-disease rhabdomyolysis, which he later said, “could have killed me”.

Despite having to take an unscheduled rest day in hospital to test levels of heat exhaustion and dehydration, Izzard managed to complete this year’s challenge in the planned time.

“I always knew I’d be back”. I don’t think I can say much more’.

The well-known comedian raised millions for charity with his spectacular feat of endurance.
