Emotional GOP Delegate Makes Plea for Neutrality on Same Sex Marriage

If someone makes a long-shot attempt to derail Trump’s presumed nomination, it would flare up at the Credentials Committee, which votes on challenges to delegates’ right to be seated, and the Rules Committee, which recommends changes to the party’s convention rules.

Dane Waters, co-founder and adviser to Delegates Unbound, announced Sunday night that one Arizona delegate has already declared independence from her state party chairman.

“I’m sure she’d lose”, said Steve Duprey, a Republican national committeeman from New Hampshire who’s on both rules committees and is opposing the rebellion. That’s an anti-Trump group that seeks to unbind delegates from having to vote for him at the convention scheduled for July 18-21 in Cleveland.

“We’re all working together and focused on the things that the American people are anxious about”, he said. At the 1952 Republican convention, Dwight D. Eisenhower outmaneuvered Robert Taft on seating contested delegates to win.

“We don’t get a whole lot of questions about life in Iowa, but we get a lot about how we do things in caucuses and within the party”, Popma said.

But the draft platform doesn’t really change its stance on abortion. Other sources cited by the Journal say there are as few as 15 or possibly more than 30 members who like the idea of unshackling delegates. Behind his celebrity-fueled candidacy and his crowd-stirring performances, many rank-and-file Republicans say they find it hard to gauge whether Trump has a core belief system that qualifies him to carry the mantle of Republican nominee. Ted Cruz, Tenn. Rep. Marsha Blackburn and Trump’s children have either been named by the Trump campaign as speakers or have said themselves that they have a speaking slot.

Allied with other groups like Free the Delegates, they are facing a GOP establishment determined to prevent a toppling of the presumptive nominee – or any embarrassing, nationally televised showdowns during the four-day convention.

He said the Trump campaign has not meddled in the platform fight and is instead letting the delegates do what they were elected to do.

The draft language shared with CNN also would slightly alter the party’s position on Israel, reinstating a reference to an “undivided” Jerusalem and removing a reference to Palestine in support of a two-state solution.

Republican Party leaders are working to hammer out a platform that stays true to core conservative principles while fitting the mold of their unconventional presumptive nominee and the rapidly changing culture.

“I can vote on the rules committee, theoretically, however I wanted to”, he said.

Georgia Republican rules committee member Randy Evans told The Atlanta Journal Constitution that the Rules Committee would only need 28 members to force a vote on a minority report from the committee to allow delegates to vote how they want to vote on the first ballot.

The original draft of the 2016 GOP platform, obtained by CNN, included a passage about Title IX that chastises the White House for federal guidance instructing public facilities like schools to accommodate transgender individuals.

“People have come to terms with the fact that this is what the electorate wanted, and whether they agree with it personally or not, the mood that I hear is that the delegates are ready to do what the electorate wants, ” he said.
