A welcoming party awaited with flowers, balloons and signs to welcome them to Canada. Faces were cradled in hands and the youngest child, a baby boy, was passed around.

She lives in British Columbia and sponsored the family’s relocation to Canada.
Mohammed Kurdi, his wife and children will all stay with Tima Kurdi and her family for now.
Darryl Dyck/AP Tima Kurdi, who lives in the Vancouver area, lifts up her 5-month-old nephew Sherwan Kurdi after the family’s arrival in Canada.
“Even though the tragedy was very painful for us, it’s opened the doors for others – that’s what counts”, she said of Alan Kurdi’s death.
Seeing Mohammed Kurdi and his family finally walk on Canadian soil is “bittersweet”, Donnelly said, explaining that he had been working with Tima Kurdi to submit applications for both of her brothers’ families.
Now, sitting in the middle of her new salon, where the storefront sign was installed just a day earlier, Tima talks about pain, but also about resilience.
Alan’s photo and the story behind it ignited an outpouring of public support for Syrian refugees around the world.
Alan Kurdi drowned when a boat attempting the perilous crossing from Turkey to Greece, capsized.
A tearful Tima Kurdi told media she was thankful to the global community, and everyone in Canada who had helped her family make the hard journey. The boy’s father, Abdullah Kurdi, survived.
“(I’m) very, very happy and excited but at the same time… very sad about (my) uncle’s kids”, said Hedeen Kurdi, 16, with her aunt translating. However, she said that she understands its power. Canadian officials said the application didn’t have the required documentation.
Tima Kurdi expressed gratitude to her MP, Fin Donnelly, whom she singled out as being instrumental in helping her family come to Canada.
While she praises Canada for its efforts – and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in particular – Kurdi worries that already the world is beginning to forget the thousands of people still struggling to escape Syria. The three politicians, as well as MLA Peter Fassbender, were all at the airport.
Tima Kurdi, aunt of late Syrian Kurdish brothers Alan and Ghalib Kurdi, attends a rally organized by the local Kurdish community calling on the Canadian government to allow more Syrian refugees into the country, in Vancouver, B.C., on Sunday, September 6, 2015.

And to Abdullah, whose plight was on the family’s mind during their 10-hour flight to Vancouver, Tima said, in tears: “We wish you were with us, I can not say … but you’re always here”.
