End of an era at UGA not necessarily end of Richt

With Mark Richt having the option to stay at the University of Georgia in an administrative, athletic department role, he may end up being right about Eason and the rest of the recruiting class of 2016 liking the new head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Following his mutual decision to leave the Georgia Bulldogs, could Mark Richt’s name begin coming up in Indianapolis Colts rumors as an option to be an National Football League head coach to take over for Chuck Pagano? Soon after, Georgia announced the news that Richt was out as coach. I’m not. If the fan base wants more out of their program, then I’ve no problem with his firing or him agreeing to step down as head coach. Finishing behind Missouri twice and not taking advantage of the long slumber Tennessee seem to be in just doesn’t cut it, even if Georgia think of themselves as bigger than they actually are. I know all UGA alumni and supporters will look forward to celebrating the successful conclusion of his coaching career at UGA in a bowl game later this year. Richt won the SEC title twice, which was two more than the two coaches preceding him.

“If things don’t go the way people … want them to go, I can understand people being disappointed and thinking there’s a better way”. The only good thing about it is the fact that Coach Richt will be allowed to coach the Bulldogs in a bowl game.

Richt was offered an opportunity to join Georgia in an administrative capacity, but initial reports suggest he’s going to listen to the opportunities in this busy offeason for coaching changes.

Having signed a contract extension for $4 million a year through 2019, Richt does not have to go out and find another position tomorrow. But at a school like Georgia, coaches can’t afford getting lapped by SEC competition.

Georgia (9-3) concluded its regular season with Saturday’s 13-7 win over Georgia Tech. The facilities and support of Georgia also allows it to win national championships and has weaker competition in the SEC. Dan Mullen of Mississippi State was also floated along with Tom Herman of Houston, as possible replacements for Mark Richt. “You chose Georgia for a reason, and it was more than just me or (offensive coordinator Brian) Schottenheimer”. “That’s what excites me the most, to think that I had a part to play in that”.

As for the Georgia opening, McGarity had little to say Monday, deflecting questions about the impending search by saying a couple of times that the focus should be on Richt. After those two early SEC titles, Richt had gone 10 years without one. He was asked twice directly why, after praising he’s heavily in a press release issued Sunday, he made the decision that Richt should be replaced. “I love my alma mater, the ‘U.’ No doubt about it, but there’s been nobody calling or writing or texting or anything like that”. “I think the expectations have been built to the point that if you don’t win a championship it’s kind of miserable around here”.
