Engine defect prompts Cathay flight to divert
The airline said an engine defect caused flight CX170, an Airbus A330 aircraft, which left Perth just before midnight, to be diverted to Denpasar, where it was met by firefighters.

An afternoon flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles made an unexpected emergency landing in Anchorage, Alaska, after the cabin suddenly lost pressure.
A Cathay Pacific passenger flight en route from Perth to Hong Kong with 267 people on board made an emergency landing in Bali, Indonesia early on Friday, 25 September, after some mid-air drama.
“There were flames and sparks flying out of the motor,” passenger Joel Sirna told 6PR presenter Gary Adshead, as cited by the West Australian.
Some passengers were highly distressed and others tried to calm them down.
“There was no fire on board, and no passengers or crew were injured”, the statement read.
Many passengers were confident they would land safely, he said, “but then obviously there were those were who weren’t, and were shaking and crying”.
“We were stuck sitting there for about two hours until we could actually get off the plane”.
It also said safety remains the airline’s highest priority.
Either way, the CX170 was forced to make an emergency lading at Denpasar Indonesia, where all 251 passengers were put up overnight in hotel accommodation.
The engine was shut down and an emergency landing was declared.
“We couldn’t see the flames anymore so we were hoping it was all good”, he said.
Sirna said he and the rest of his group of six would continue on to New York as planned.
The airline is investigating.
Some of those on board even reported seeing sparks and flames coming from the engine, although a spokeswoman for Cathay Pacific denied this.

The airline said a problem with a cooling fan had led to the issue.
