Engineer builds ‘working’ Thor’s hammer that only he can lift

Pan challenged unsuspecting passersby on the streets of Venice Beach, California to lift the hammer.

As the legend goes, the hammer, otherwise known as Mjolnir, can only be lifted by those who are worthy of its power – so naturally everyone gives it a go. But rather than create a replica that just anyone could lift, Pan’s Mjolnir can only be lifted by him.

Using magnets and batteries, the enterprising dude constructed the hammer, then equipped it with a thumbprint scanner that only recognizes his thumbprint.

The trick is that the hammer has to be placed on a metal surface to make it impossible for others to pick up.

The handle is attached to a capacitive touch sensor, which in turn is attached to an Arduino Pro Mini and a solid state relay, which serves as a switching device. The electromagnets switches on immediately when someone grasps the handle, attaching the hammer to the metal surface.

However, the hammer can be turned off via a fingerprint sensor keyed to Pan’s thumbprint.

There’s a scene in the most recent Avengers movie where all of the movies heroes are winding down in Stark Tower, and after a few drinks, they all take turns seeing if anybody can lift Thor’s hammer. You see, Pan is an avid Marvel fan, and as such had visions of creating his own Mjolnir (aka, Thor’s hammer). Sometimes brain does beat brawn.
