England capable of scoring 500 in ODI, says Chris Woakes

With the win at Trent Bridge, England have taken an unassailable series lead 3-0 in the five-match series.

Azhar Ali, the Pakistan captain, made 80 and left-hander Imad Wasim an unbeaten 57 in this day/night fixture.

England arrived at Headingley after scoring 444 for three – a record total in worldwide one-day cricket – to win the third match at Trent Bridge by 169 runs earlier this week.

And that has proven the case so far, with England romping to victory in the first three matches to seal the five game series.

Alex Hales’ England record 171 – bettering Robin Smith’s 167 not out 23 years ago – England’s world-best 444 for three and Jos Buttler’s new mark for this country’s fastest one-day worldwide 50 from just 22 balls all naturally overshadowed Woakes’ commendable efforts.

The captain, Eoin Morgan, can call on the experience of Joe Root, who is named alongside the all-rounder Moeen Ali and Nottinghamshire’s Alex Hales. All I can do is try to score as many runs as I can in the remaining games and keep myself in contention for that spot.

Pakistan’s stop-start innings got under way with an early wicket, Sharjeel Khan departing to a fine running catch by Ben Stokes after skewing a drive over extra-cover off Chris Jordan.

England, chasing a target of 248, finished on 252 for six with 12 balls to spare.

They then knocked Pakistan over for 275, with Chris Woakes continuing his electric form and picking up four wickets, while the rest were shared around as they have been for much of the series.

The England spinners kept the Pakistan batsmen in check, with Rashid taking three for 47 from his 10 overs and Moeen two for 39.

Alex Hales beat Robin Smith’s 23-year record for the highest individual ODI score by an Englishman, smashing 171 off 122 balls.

Pakistan’s Sharjeel Khan leaves the field after getting out for for 16 runs against England during the fourth one day worldwide at Headingley cricket ground, Leeds. Hales and Root’s partnership was also England’s third-highest in one-day internationals.
