Stokes has had an injury-ravaged summer, in which he has yet to complete a Test match or play in any limited-overs fixture for his country.

Chris Woakes, who took 11 wickets in England’s first test defeat, grabbed 4-67 and led England’s four-man seam attack.

The touring side, replying to England’s 589 for eight declared, resumed on 57 for four and James Anderson soon had Shan Masood caught at second slip by Joe Root for 39.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq smashed Moeen for six and played aggressively for his 35 before he was bowled by Woakes off an inside edge just before tea.

“It’s great to see him stepping up to number three and playing with the responsibility there”, said captain Alastair Cook, who made 105 and 76 not out.

At lunch, Pakistan were wobbling on 47/2.

England stretched a first innings advantage of 391 heading the second half of the match to more than 500 runs by the time they declared and called the Pakistan team back to bat, with some relentless England bowling making it rough going for the visitors throughout. Pakistan were a bowler short after Riaz couldn’t come onto the field after sustaining an injury while batting.

After having opener Mohammad Hafeez caught by Gary Ballance for 42, the Worcestershire all-rounder then claimed the wicket of Younis Khan for 28, saving Cook some embarrassment after he had shelled a chance when Younis was in the early stages of his knock.

“Cook and [Joe] Root took the game away from us, full credit to them, but we were nowhere near them”. But Misbah believes Yasir would bounce back stronger in the upcoming match. “We could have scored around 400 in the first innings (instead of 198), the ball wasn’t doing anything much”.

Meanwhile, England have announced a 13-man squad for the third Test starting on August 3.

Jake Ball, who made his Test debut during the first Test at Lord’s, and experienced pacer Steven Finn are the other two options if the hosts decide to replace Stokes with another seamer.
