England manager Sam Allardyce thanks Sunderland fans for ‘absolutely magnificent’ support
Allardyce – who gained credit for keeping Sunderland in the Premier League last season – replaces Roy Hodgson, who stepped down after England lost to minnows Iceland in the last 16 of Euro 2016 last month.

The 61-year-old is confident his man-management skills can make a difference to England’s tournament football.
Scholes won 66 caps for England before a somewhat premature global retirement in 2004 and he feels the same problems that hindered the so-called “golden generation” during his own playing days are also harming the embattled squad Allardyce will inherit.
“What we all want is a successful England team and that will be the biggest challenge in my career”.
The England skipper, who is also his country’s highest goalscorer, said he had no intention of retiring from worldwide duty.
Allardyce first applied for the England job a decade ago when he was in charge of Bolton, but the FA went with Steve McClaren.
“It shows you must be doing a half decent job in the domestic game and working for your country remains the pinnacle in football”.
“Certainly for me it was a very nervous occasion, to wait and see who was successful”.
“It’s a very bitter experience as we all know but that inner drive.players should keep, they should hold it and use it as a positive, say “we don’t want to experience that again”.
‘I think that this is a new challenge for me.
Allardyce also revealed he has not yet made a decision on who will captain England, which leaves the Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney – heavily criticised for his performances at Euro 2016 – sweating on whether he will retain the armband.
Allardyce has previously managed Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United, but much of his coaching career has been spent scrapping in the bottom half of the table rather than challenging for Premier League titles.
“The good thing about really talented players is they make your life easier”.
“I’m going to leave that until I meet all the players and get all the staff together”, said Allardyce, who described his management style as “pragmatic”. “My coaching technique is to try to give players the opportunity to win football matches, home or away, and make them aware of the opposition”, he said. I think I’ve got the experience to pass on and challenge not only the England team but also myself. “Managing five Premier League teams has given me huge experience”.

Allardyce will pick his first Three Lions squad in late August ahead of the opening World Cup Qualifier with Slovakia on 4 September. “I don’t think there is any doubt about that”.
