England ‘pinching themselves’ at ODI revival

Alex Hales’s stunning 171 provided the platform for England to post the highest ever one-day global total of 444 for three as they beat Pakistan by 169 runs at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.

Stokes is joined for the game at Old Trafford by Durham county team-mate Mark Wood in a squad that includes nine of the team which beat Sri Lanka in their previous T20 match in July.

It was also the highest ODI total in a match between two Test nations, topping South Africa’s 439/2 for two against the West Indies at Johannesburg past year.

England’s 444 for 3 was built on 171 from opener Alex Hales – an ODI record for an Englishman – and included Jos Buttler striking a 22-ball fifty, another national best.

He was backed up by Jos Buttler, who scored 90 not out from 51 balls, and Eoin Morgan, who scored 57 at a strike rate of 211.11.

England were breaking a 10-year-old one-day worldwide record, set by Sri Lanka against Holland, and did so only from the final ball of the innings when Buttler smashed yet another boundary.

Wahab also bowled Buttler on 75, again a front-foot no-ball reprieving the batsman, during a horror display that saw him concede 110 runs from his 10 overs – the second most expensive bowling performance in ODI history. Their tally also contained 16 sixes, a new record for England in a one-day global.

England are unbeaten in white-ball cricket so far this season.

It all began with Alex Hales hitting England’s highest individual score of 171 runs.

The victory in the third ODI also means England have taken the five-match series 3-0 and the way they are playing at the moment, you wouldn’t put it past them to complete a whitewash.

Opener Sharjeel Khan hit 58 but wickets fell at regular intervals until Mohammad Amir smashed 58 in 28 balls to share an unlikely last-wicket stand of 76 with Yasir Shah (26 not out).

He was the only England batsman to miss out as Joe Root joined Hales.

Asked if they could repeat or improve on their latest feat, Woakes said: “I think it could happen. but not very often”.

Hales flayed four sixes and 22 fours in his 122-ball knock to surpass Robin Smith’s 167 not out against Australia in Birmingham in 1993.

Chris Woakes, the England fast bowler, has admitted the players “have to pinch ourselves” after the dramatic turnaround in their one-day fortunes over the past year.

Then Rashid signed off with the wicket of Azhar, whose hard work ended in anti-climax thanks to a tame chip to long-off from the final ball of the leg-spinner’s 10 overs.

Adil Rashid one of five Yorkshire players in action for England on his home ground took three wickets against Pakistan
