England rattles South Africa in 1st test
England had resumed on 179 for four and looking to prosper under sunny skies a world away from the drizzle and heavy clouds which had curtailed the opening day’s play in Durban. However without his unbeaten 63, the visitors would have been in far worse shape.

Compton, by contrast, gritted his teeth and eked out seven runs from the first hour’s play. Shortly after however, it was the stubborn Middlesex man who finally gave his wicket away. I have spent a lot of time bowling over the wicket to left-handers and not having great control of the ball moving across or swinging in.
From 14 for 2, South Africa was able to get back in front, thanks to de Villiers’s 49 in an 86-run stand with Elgar. In an attempt to clear mid-off, Steyn lobbed a catch to Chris Woakes (0-28) giving Ali his fourth wicket.
Stuart Broad strode up the crease. The Notts’ paceman had found resurgent form during last summer’s Ashes series versus Australia.
Broad began to open his shoulders ups and was grimly slogging for the covers.
On England not reviewing Stokes’ appeal: “It’s something we have to sharpen up on, but Alastair Cook thought the batsman hit it. We need to work on our communication, which is something [former wicketkeeper] Matt Prior was good at”.
The host’s bowlers had mixed fortunes. South African quick bowlers Morkel and Dale Steyn finished with four wickets each.
After Nick Compton had taken advantage of the new ball’s hardness to move from 70 to 85 in just 19 deliveries with a succession of boundaries off Steyn, Morkel induced a pull shot that brought a feather through to the wicketkeeper.
South Africa now had to “show some character and some fight”, Elgar said, to scrap for a draw.
Five years ago Virender Sehwag plundered 13 scores of 50 or more in a calendar year to topple the legendary Viv Richards and now Root has done the same in 2015.
It could have been even better for England after the dismissal of Van Zyl with the second ball of the innings, when he chose to leave a delivery from Broad that clipped his off stump. He also looked little dodgy like skipper Amla.
The Proteas’ batting woes can not be ignored.
Steven Finn might have added the scalp of De Villiers for 11 but the on-field umpires could not be certain Ben Stokes had taken a clean catch at gully and, as so often, slow-motion replays merely clouded the issue.
De Villiers, on 26no at the interval, may now hold the key to the match. Once again Broad had struck.
Broad also removed the main cogs of the opponents’ batting, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers, whose wicket he particularly enjoyed.
Spinner Moeen Ali bowled Faf du Plessis for two, the batsman dancing down the track but missing the ball which clipped the top of the bails.
In order to match an increasingly confident side, South Africa needed their overnight partnership of Elgar and Temba Bavuma to bat long, but those hopes were dashed with the second ball of the day when Stuart Broad had Bavuma play on.

Ali, like Broad, ended with a four wicket haul returning figures of 4/69. Only Moeen notched a wicket outside of Broad, going for 45 runs.
