Former electrician Clattenburg was also in the middle for May’s FA Cup final.

However, Portugal may have to face France without experienced defender Pepe, who trained separately from his team-mates again yesterday as he continued to recover from a thigh muscle injury in time for Sunday’s final. He refereed the 2012 English League Cup final and men’s Olympic final, the 2013 Community Shield and the 2014 European Super Cup.

At this summer’s tournament in France he has refereed Belgium vs Italy, Czech Republic vs Croatia and the opening round of 16 game between Switzerland and Poland. He was also a fourth official when Iceland played Austria.
In 2005, he and his assistants failed to award a goal when a long-range shot from Tottenham’s Pedro Mendes was fumbled well over the line by Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll.
Despite those controversies, he remains a highly-regarded official.
He moved on to the Football Conference, before making his bow in the Football League in 1999, first as a linesman and then as a referee a year later.

However, Santos’ brand of results-based coaching has produced this opportunity to win a first-ever major worldwide trophy, and the Portuguese will be desperate to take it after near misses at Euro 2000, Euro 2004 on home soil, World Cup 2006 and Euro 2012.
