England’s Welbeck a doubt for Euro 2016 with knee injury

Worryingly for Welbeck, Roy Hodgson will announce his England squad for Euro 2016 on Thursday morning.

Swelling around the knee tends to need to reduce before the full extent of an injury can be diagnosed through scans.

Welbeck, 25, spent the first six months of the season on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his left knee in September.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says “the first signs look like lateral meniscus”.

Danny Welbeck has a knee problem.

“We have to wait for a scan”.

“At half-time, I looked at him, he was very down and he had pain”. “But for me, to get 70 minutes in a game like this, with high intensity and the pressure, it’s good for me”. We tried to keep him on the pitch and straight away he tried to move on and he said it was impossible. Danny is a strong boy, he is not a guy who moves out quickly. “The good news [if it is not serious] is that he will not be out of the Euros and the bad news [if it is] is that he will. I don’t know but I am an optimist”.

However, Welbeck’s misfortune proved to be Wilshere’s gain after the England midfielder completed 70 minutes of the Premier League clash on Sunday fresh from his recent comeback from injury.

Wenger said of Wilshere, who was making only his second appearance of the season: “I felt he has shown today he is well-prepared physically and overall I believe his performance was encouraging”.

“Also we have had improvement in the Champions League, but playing so many games is hard in midweek”.

“It’s hard to measure how much we have missed him this season because of course you want your best players available so you can rotate”.
