“He s very similar to Matt Prior. when he was at his best, we could often be 100 for five and he d change the momentum”, explained Cook.
“Jonny Bairstow was quite incredible with the bat, but the mistakes he made with the wicketkeeping gloves are a concern”.
“I’ve probably worked harder on my keeping than my batting since coming back from South Africa”. He put on 82 for the sixth wicket with Cook.
Hales endured a patchy first tour of South Africa, where he averaged only 17, but now looks a genuine Test opener alongside skipper Alastair Cook.
“It was pretty good”, he said.
“I was out of the side for a couple of years”. He’s different to Ben Stokes and while not as dynamic, he is certainly very effective, bowling with pace and accuracy.
“I’m really pleased to back up the form for Yorkshire in an England shirt”, said the 26-year-old.
“That is great for our squad to have that [second] all round option”.
The opener admitted he had a first Test ton on his mind but was satisfied to have played another major role as England set the tourists a ground-record target of 362.
“Jonny is enjoying both roles”, said Cook.
Compton, who has two Championship matches for Middlesex to restate his case, may have run out of time with Durham’s Scott Borthwick widely tipped to replace him.
Kaushal Silva was Sri Lanka’s man-of-the-series.
England do still have concerns, principally the form of Nick Compton – who may well have played his final Test after only 51 runs in his five innings this summer.
England named uncapped batsman Dawid Malan, fast bowler Tymal Mills and spinner Liam Dawson in the Twenty20 squad with Joe Root and Alex Hales rested.
Hampshire’s Liam Dawson was the only other uncapped name for all that he was an unused presence throughout the World T20 in India.
There was laughter on the England balcony as, following Moeen Ali’s dismissal for nine, the usually cautious Cook twice attempted ungainly scoop shots either side of a heaved six over midwicket off Eranga.
