Enhancing connectivity central to India’s partnership with ASEAN: PM Modi

His comments came amid reports that Modi might keep away from the Saarc Summit in view of the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly over Jammu and Kashmir.

He also expressed grave concern over the growing threat of radicalisation and extremist violence, which he said, were a common threat to today’s societies.

On East Asia Summit, the Prime Minister said, it is the premier forum for discussions on the challenges and opportunities before the Asia Pacific region.

“In the afternoon, the President will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India”, the White House said.

The fresh jibe came three days after Modi launched a sharp attack on Pakistan, telling G20 leaders that “one single nation” in South Asia was spreading “agents of terror”. According to CNN-News18, Modi is expected to discuss cross-border terrorism and proxy war fuelled by Pakistan at the summit.

“We have to join our efforts and cooperate on multiple levels to fight the situation, ‘ noted the leader in his address to the Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)”. It is learnt that both leaders discussed climate change, energy co-operation and also reviewed progress on the Indo-US collaboration in nuclear energy, solar energy and innovation.

The meeting was “very warm and friendly”, they said.

Laotian premier Thongloun Sisoulith complimented India’s Act East policy and its contribution to Asean and hoped the summit will provide future direction.

India and most other countries in South Asia are keen to pursue a peaceful path to economic development, Modi said.

Modi held extensive bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Wednesday. Reiterating his support, Mr Obama said usa will continue to be a strong partner of India. Two leaders reviewed bilateral relations which were upgraded to special strategic partnership previous year during Mr. Modi’s visit to South Korea. During the meeting, Laos Prime Minister reiterated his country’s support to India as a permanent member of a reformed and expanded UN Security Council.

Modi stressed that enhancing connectivity is at the heart of India’s strategic partnership with ASEAN. On Thursday, Modi steered clear of referring to the tribunal order, while articulating India’s stock posture on the South China Sea – support for the freedom of navigation and overflight, and unimpeded commerce.
