Enjoyably, Padres open series with a win over Reds 2

In Sunday’s 4-3, 10-inning loss in Arizona, the Reds argued that two Diamondbacks runners failed to touch a base on Chris Owings’ winning single, and tried to tag the bases to extend the game.

Kennedy (7-10) was lifted after throwing 98 pitches, only 58 for strikes.

Rea, who had over 70 friends and family members in attendance on Tuesday, gave up three runs on seven hits as the Padres beat the Reds 11-6 in the second of a three-game series. OF Marlon Byrd leads the Reds with five homers over the last four weeks.

Bruce now needs 17 more hits to become just the sixth player to collect 1,000 hits and 200 home runs in a Reds uniform. He has tossed 37.2 innings and logged a 1.381 WHIP. Starting pitcher Ian Kennedy allowed two hits and a run while striking out four over 5.0 innings to get the win and go to 7-10 for the season and Craig Kimbrel earned his 32nd save.

“It’s insane to think about it, but honestly I don’t think too much about where I stand or where it stands in history just because you’re so consumed by the game and playing it”, Bruce said. “I don’t have a good view, but from the view I had I thought it was a strike”.

Lorenzen (3-8) gave up seven hits in his shortest outing of the season.

Frazier and Jason Bourgeois each hit solo home runs to left field against Frank Garces, who surrendered three runs in the ninth. Derek Norris ripped a double down the line that barely bounded past an outstretched Todd Frazier at 3B.

“It couldn’t have gone more flawless for him tonight”, Padres manager Pat Murphy said.

“It was a constant grind, ” Kennedy said. He struck out one batter and walked two, losing his fourth straight and seventh of his last eight starts.

Bruce slammed his 18th homer in the second, sending an 89 miles per hour fastball 406 feet over the right-field fence, and the Reds appeared poised to score more as Kennedy struggled with his control. That was followed by back-to-back walks by Billy Hamilton and Brandon Phillips to load the bases, but Eugenio Suarez popped out to end the inning. He ranks ninth on the Reds’ career list.

In the dozen games since the all-rookie rotation started, the Reds have scored 38 runs. The 25-year-old had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso prior to the game.
