A new era in Canadian federal politics is set to begin Wednesday, when Justin Trudeau is officially sworn in as prime minister and officially unveils the Liberal team responsible for making good on his promises.

Among the other first challenges the new Liberal government will face is sticking to campaign promises of delivering on tax changes for the middle class, and bringing more Syrian and Iraqi refugees to Canada. He made the pledge before knowing which of his female candidates would be elected as MPs meaning this is Canada’s first affirmative action cabinet.

The oaths, which end in “so help me God”, can be altered should individuals chose to “affirm” their oath, in which case the word “swear” is replaced by the word “declare”, and the expression “so help me God” is omitted.

Outgoing Prime Minister Stephen Harper will have submitted his resignation to the Governor General shortly before the signing in ceremony. Of those, women held 12 portfolios, including transport, environment, public works and labour. Tall and trim, he is a former school teacher and member of Parliament since 2008.

Just who will be in Trudeau’s first cabinet remains a closely guarded secret.

Liberal sources said Mr. Trudeau wants his cabinet to reflect Canada’s ethnic diversity, all the while featuring gender parity and including representatives from all provinces and a member from the North.
