AJC’s Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights continues to call for the release of Iranian political prisoners and reform of the country’s human rights performance.
UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran Dr. Ahmed Shaheed and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have documented extensive, ongoing human rights violations in Iran.
The resolution is based on a report by a United Nations investigator who says executions in Iran have been rising at “an exponential rate” since 2005 and could top 1,000 this year.
Iran’s Deputy UN Ambassador Gholamhossein Dehghani dismissed the resolution as “hostile” and “short-sighted”, saying it ignored “the real threats to the most fundamental rights by violent extremists”.
“The Iranian authorities shouldn’t think they are getting a pass on human rights just because the nuclear accord has been signed”, said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, on Tuesday.
Past year the resolution was adopted by a stronger margin, with 125 countries voting in favour, 13 against and 47 abstentions.
The resolution, along with similar ones on North Korea, Myanmar and Syria, will go to a new vote at a General Assembly plenary session next month.
The committee on November 19 approved a nonbinding resolution drafted by Canada that expresses serious concern about rights violations in the Islamic republic.
