Erdogan vows military shake-up as Turkey seeks to assuage critics
USA officials have said Turkey must provide proof that Gulen was involved in the coup attempt.

“They are all working together as to what might be done, and. within a very short amount of time a new structure will be emerging”.
Turkey’s government has said the attempted coup was organized by Gulen.
Some Western leaders expressed concern that Erdogan, who said he was nearly killed or captured by the mutineers, was using the opportunity to consolidate power and further a process of stifling dissent.
Erdogan also said there was no obstacle to extending the state of emergency beyond the initial three months – a comment likely to spark concern among critics already fearful about the pace of his crackdown.
The putsch left more than 300 dead and caused scenes of devastation, especially in Ankara where raids by fighter jets and attack helicopters turned parts of parliament and the police headquarters to rubble.
“There is no excuse, there is no way in which the reaction can undermine fundamental freedoms and rights”, Mogherini said after remarks at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington.
“This state of emergency advisory jurisdiction is only for the objective of eliminating threats to democracy, rights and freedoms, and the rule of law”, it added.
The president added Turkey is “a democratic state run by rule of law”, and “you can not put aside the people’s demands”.
Courts in Turkey have remanded 85 generals and admirals in custody ahead of trials over their roles in the attempted coup, while dozes more are still being questioned.
“We have witnessed many coups in the past and have stopped this one altogether”.
“The state of emergency law is a process of empowering governors more. It isn’t martial law of 1990s”, he wrote on Twitter.
Markets were less confident. The cost of insuring Turkish debt against default also surged.
Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said the state of emergency was aimed at averting a possible second military coup.
The crackdown that has been launched in Turkey following the coup, including the mass arrests of suspects and the talk of reviving the death penalty, has raised worldwide concern. The president vowed that Turkey will maintain fiscal discipline. They will never be able to split us up. Had they succeeded it is clear that these people would have been included into this business.
“Fetullah terrorist organisation had a parallel organisation within the state and every step they have taken in making the attempt and failed coup, I don’t think we have come to the end of it yet”.
The Defence Ministry is investigating all military judges and prosecutors, and has suspended 262 of them, broadcaster NTV reported, while 900 police officers in the capital, Ankara, were also suspended on Wednesday. The purge also extended to civil servants in the environment and sports ministries.

The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), a right-wing grouping and the smallest of the three opposition parties represented in parliament, said it would back the government if it decides to restore the death penalty. No details were given as to the reason for the detention, though dozens of senior military personnel have been put under arrest for alleged involvement in the thwarted coup.
