ESNY Podcast: New York Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo Discussion
The veteran assistant was promoted to head coach officially on Thursday, replacing Tom Coughlin, who resigned last week after leading the Giants for 12 seasons.

Before Ben McAdoo was named the head coach for the New York Giants, there were rumblings that former Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith had impressed in his interview with the team and could have been a potential finalist for the job. After winning their second Super Bowl under Coughlin, the Giants have missed the playoffs the past four seasons.
The 38-year-old McAdoo has been on the fast track since reviving the offense over the past two seasons.
“It has been a privilege to work and learn under Coach Coughlin”, McAdoo said in a statement posted on the team’s website Thursday aftenroon.
McAdoo coached under McCarthy until the New York Giants hired him as their offensive coordinator two years ago.
“We wanted to find someone who had the intelligence, the leadership skills and the teaching ability to be the person to lead us in the future”, Mara said.
“I think Coach McAdoo is a great coach, a great teacher, and will be a great leader for this team”.
Not to mention, McAdoo is a young, creative coordinator, who, if successful, could be the Giants coach for a very long time.
“I’m my own biggest critic”, McAdoo said.
“Coach Coughlin gets paid to make decisions”, Reese said then. “We’re looking to reload and that’s going to start in a few minutes”.
McAdoo interviewed with team president John Mara and general manager Jerry Reese on January 5 and again on Wednesday when he also spoke with team chairman Steve Tisch.
The Giants scored just 294 points the season before McAdoo was hired to run the offense. I know some Giants fans are critical of Spags, but I still feel, for the sake of consistency, he is the right guy for the job.
“Like I said, I’ve been here for 21 years-ever since I’ve been here our coaches, our head coach, and our personnel have always been part of the process with personnel, that won’t change”.
Pederson is a former Eagles quarterback and now on the staff of former Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid.
When asked what stood out most about McAdoo, Reese said “Well all the guys were good, it was nothing in particular”.
The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to name to Doug Pederson as their new head coach following the completion of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season, according to reports.

The Giants pride themselves on being a classy organization, and the actions of Beckham in that game certainly gave the team a bad look. McAdoo probably won’t rock the boat too much on the assistant coaches and will likely retain defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and his staff as well. He moved on to the 49ers the next season and then joined the Packers, for whom he coached tight ends for six seasons and then became Aaron Rodgers’ quarterback coach for two seasons. “I did talk to Eli right after the last press conference we had, and I talked to him about some of the candidates, and he obviously liked Ben”.
