Estrada pitches Blue Jays past Yanks
Estrada’s lengthy start was just the thing for Toronto’s bullpen, which was worn down following Sunday’s 11-inning loss to Boston.

And for all that effort, Toronto still wound up losing.
The Blue Jay known as Go Go has been a no-go in some games recently.
After a three-game set at the stadium last week, the New York Yankees will head North of the border to take on the Toronto Blue Jays.
New York’s offense didn’t have a whole lot, either. Over that span, he amassed 2.1 innings of work en route to a 11.57 ERA and 3.47 WHIP. The surging Blue Jays have won eight of eleven following Monday’s victory.
The ninth-inning rally made the game look closer than it was as McCann cut the lead in half with his two-run blast off Loup, but after Teixeira’s double, Castro and Headley failed to deliver a big hit as the Yankees finished the night 0-for-4 with men in scoring position.
Estrada struck out six in the game to improve to 3-2 on the year.
For Tepera, the move marked his third recall from the minors this season. Through five innings, it was 4-0 Toronto. Infielder Jimmy Paredes was designated for assignment to make space for Tepera….
For the NY game, Gibbons said he had Tepera available out of the bullpen and a couple of lefthanders in Chad Girodo and Aaron Loup, and possibly Jesse Chavez. Four Toronto relievers, including closer Roberto Osuna, were unavailable against NY.
Both teams wore special hats and jerseys in honour of Memorial Day in the United States.
The Blue Jays wore a camouflage design based on what was referred to as the Canadian Disruptive Pattern favoured by soldiers in the Canadian Forces.
But on this night, it was the length of the outing that was just as valuable for Gibbons.
Estrada has now pitched at least six innings with five hits or less in seven straight starts.
Through seven innings, the Yankees really hadn’t even threatened to score.
Marco Estrada was looking become only the second Blue Jay to beat the New York Yankees twice in five days, the first one was Dave Stieb. In the eighth inning with Castro at third and Aaron Hicks at second, with two out, Estrada managed to get Ellsbury to pop out to short to end the threat.
On a recent Toronto Blue Jays’ team charter flight, slugging outfielder Jose Bautista presented a team-discussed lineup change to manager John Gibbons.
The Yankees, who entered the night second-to-last in the AL in runs (190) and on-base percentage (.302) and last in slugging percentage (.377), lowered those numbers against Marco Estrada. Ryan Goins was 2 for 2 with a home run for his first multihit game since April 13. Michael Saunders then doubled, scoring another run. Edwin Encarnacion’s power numbers and batting average are down, but he has knocked in eight runs during a six-game RBI streak for Toronto.
“We need a great effort from our starter, not a good one, a great one”, Gibbons said, in a discussion about the ongoing state of affairs with his bullpen.

The Jays chased Nova from the game in the seventh after centre fielder Kevin Pillar opened the inning with a double in the gap in right centre.
