EU increases aid to migrants in Greece ahead of winter

The European Union will provide humanitarian organizations in Greece an additional 115 million euros ($129 million) on top of 83 million euros from earlier this year, the European Commission said on Saturday.

The 28-member bloc under the Facility for Refugees in Turkey will be financing the Emergency Social Safety Net (ESSN) with €348 million ($393 million), an aid expected to reach out to one million refugees in Turkey.

The AP also reported that according to Christos Stylianides, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, the money will go towards other needs of migrants such as food stamps, heating and living facilities for unaccompanied minors.

More than a million refugees and migrants traveled from Turkey to Greece previous year before an EU-Turkey deal stemmed the flow in March.

The Emergency Social Safety Net (ESSN), financed with 348 million euro by the European Union and its member states under the Facility for Refugees in Turkey, is the first social assistance scheme of its kind, “marrying global humanitarian know-how and government services to reach out to one million refugees across Turkey”.

There are over 3.1 million Syrian, Iraqi and other nationality refugees in Turkey, making the country the most-welcoming host taking in refugees fleeing conflicts. Because what is this (EU-Turkey) agreement?

“Together, we will continue our work until we reach our target”.

As of October 2016, monthly cash-transfers to electronic cards will be given to refugees in need across Turkey. The European Commission says safeguards are in place to ensure the money is correctly spent.
