Eugene Dentist Reacts to Flossing Study
Despite years of study, there’s little proof that flossing daily can actually prevent gum disease and cavities.

New reports show that flossing could be an utterly pointless exercise.
The federal government has recommended flossing since 1979.
According to a new piece by writer Jeff Donn, the years of medical evidence that regularly encourage dentists to recommend the practice is as flaky as the plaque it supposedly removes.
The latest dietary guidelines for Americans, issued by the departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, quietly dropped any mention of flossing without notice. After the request, Associated Press received a letter from the government admitting that proper research had never been done, though it is required.
An investigation by Associated Press looked at research surrounding flossing which had been conducted over the past decade.
A review of 12 randomized controlled trials published in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in 2011 found only “very unreliable” evidence that flossing might reduce plaque after one and three months.
“The majority of available studies fail to demonstrate that flossing is generally effective in plaque removal”, it said.
The American Dental Association has been promoting using floss for more than a hundred years.
However, the Quebec group still advises people to floss. The AP found that numerous studies cited as proof of flossing benefits used outdated methods or used too few participants over too short a time. However, AAP President Wayne Aldredge noted to the AP that many Americans may also be flossing incorrectly, contributing to the lack of visible results of their labor. “It’s like building a house and not painting two sides of it”, he said.
Almost two dozen people went to emergency rooms in two days after using a potent batch of synthetic marijuana. However, he also said that people should still floss. However, floss companies themselves are allowed to design the studies.

“People don’t like to floss they absolutely don’t like to do it but if you say it probably doesn’t work now for sure they won’t floss”, said Dr. Ciancio. “It’s not going to harm your teeth or your gums”.
