Euro 2016: Joe Ledley confident of Wales progress after England heartbreak

Coleman wants Wales to remain focused on their own objectives now the hotly-anticipated England game is out of the way and would like to emulate Roy Hodgson’s side.

Vardy and Sturridge would have been champing at the bit in training, and when they came on they both showed what they can do. “We have got one game to go and we will now have to finish the job off on Monday”.

Ledley lasted only 67 minutes against England having recovered from a leg fracture that had looked to set to rule him out of the tournament, but has declared himself fit for what is now a crunch final group game against bottom side Russian Federation on Monday.

Reduced to a watching brief as the Group B opener against Russian Federation finished 1-1, England’s position looked bleak when the 26-year-old was thrown on for the second half against Wales along with Jamie Vardy.

We shouldn’t just settle for the draw.

“We are still in a good position – it is not the end of the world”.

They were pushed onto me a little bit earlier than normal but it was always in our thoughts to bring Sturridge and Vardy onto the field, and it was always going to be someone like Wilshere or Rashford when we’re looking for a goal.

With a win over Russian Federation also in the bank, England are through to the last 16 already in our parallel universe, which Roy Hodgson’s men are yet to achieve. “I think you have got to take chances like that at that level but he didn’t”. Hopefully, he will agree with me!

But Ledley – who fractured his leg playing for Crystal Palace on May 7 and made a remarkable recovery in time to feature at the Euros – said he came off as a precaution.

“England did it. They conceded in the last minute against Russian Federation and showed good courage to get back in the second game – and we have to do the same”.

But let’s remember that we played pretty well against Russian Federation for the most part and should have beaten them.

Jordan Henderson and James Milner also provide an option here, but a fit Wilshere is undeniably one of England’s best players.

Wales next play Russian Federation in their last group B game on Monday.

“Obviously after the game we were very disappointed, especially to lose in that manner”.

Swansea left-back Neil Taylor saw his performance rated as four out of 10, along with fellow wing-back Chris Gunter, while every other player in a Welsh shirt was given a mark of five.

Of the Russian Federation encounter, the Crystal Palace midfielder added: “Every game in the Euros is exciting”. Look at France the previous day against Albania with Antoine Griezmann and Dimitri Payet coming good for them and helping them get through in stoppage time.
