England were unable to turn possession into maximum points in group games against Russian Federation and Slovakia – sides who were both summarily dismantled in subsequent games.

Hodgson, however, said if the Football Association don’t want to extend his contract then he would not request for the same, Sport24 reported.

That said, the England defence will have to withstand more pressure than they have so far this summer and do look a little error prone.

They have averaged 29% possession so far, attempted the lowest number of dribbles in the group stage, made the second-lowest number of successful passes and had the joint second-lowest numbers of shots.

England’s players cheered, along with most neutrals, when Arnor Ingvi Traustason snatched a stoppage-time breakaway goal to beat Austria in Iceland’s final group game as it meant England would not, after all, be facing Portugal in the last 16.

The Icelandic super fans “tolfan” as they are called, had been following the National team to every game in throughout the competition but ran out of money after the last game. “We are keen to measure ourselves against the best”.

However, England’s play has been excellent.

Iceland’s strengths reside on their familiarity and team chemistry; the 16-strong team hasn’t changed in two years.

“I believe if we play the way we can and stick to the things we’ve worked on, we will win the game”.

“You just have to look at our record in the qualifiers, we score a lot of goals from set pieces”. Let us figure out which of the teams is likely to gain the victory.

“But unfortunately in a tournament, in particular, even more than in qualifying, it’s all about if you win or do you not win and as a result we didn’t win against Russia, Slovakia we didn’t win”. Give us a proper convincing win, no messing around now.

“There is no doubt about what he has done”, the England boss said of Lagerback, sat alongside captain Rooney.
