Portugal have registered a 3-3 draw against Hungary to earn a place in the knockout stages at Euro 2016. “He contributes a lot to the team and now has two goals, which is always important”, he added.

It was a nail biting encounter in a game that had national pride and personal integrity at stake but in the end both sides shared the spoils in a 3-3 final pact.

Ronaldo scored a pair of brilliant goals in Lyon on Wednesday to go down in European Championship history as the first player to score at four finals. We scored three, we could have scored more but we are very happy with the performance of the team.

Iceland’s Kari Arnason, man of the match in the 2-1 win over Austria, counts Plymouth, Aberdeen and Rotherham among his former clubs and said he had previously cheered the Three Lions at major competitions. The bottom line was we wanted to qualify.

Portugal didn’t have to wait long before Ronaldo struck again, this time sending a glancing header to the back of the net in the 62 minute.

Ronaldo wiped away a week of frustrations in France that led to him losing his composure just hours before the match when he responded to a TV reporter’s question by grabbing his microphone and tossing it into a nearby lake. “Playing England is rather nice, I never lost against them with Sweden and I think we played five or six times or something, so let’s hope we can stick to that”.

It all seemed to be going wrong again for Portugal’s talisman, but he opened his Euro account with two priceless second-half goals to take his team into the last 16.

Hungary regained the lead just two minutes after the break as Dzsudzsak’s free-kick deflected off Andre Gomes in the Portugal wall, wrong-footing goalkeeper Rui Patricio in process.

Jon Bodvarsson got Iceland in front on 18 minutes.

Ronaldo then threw the reporter’s microphone into a lake, continuing to walk with his teammates as if nothing happened.

After disappointing displays against Iceland and Austria, there was no stopping Ronaldo, who was crowned man-of-the-match in Lyon.
