Euro Cup: England down brave Wales, move closer to quarters

Wales manager Chris Coleman was devastated by the manner in which his side lost to England, and felt star player Gareth Bale was left isolated.

Sturridge also perked up England’s attack with his movement and probing runs, and scored the victor after forcing his way into the area, shoving aside his marker and finishing right-footed inside the near post.

Enter Gareth Bale. The Real Madrid forward lined up a free-kick which looked too far out, but such was the dip and swerve that Joe Hart could only palm into his net.

However, England coach Roy Hodgson decision to replace Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane with James Vardy and Sturridge respectively at half time turned out to be crucial.

The striker scored the first goal and played a part in Daniel Sturridge’s stoppage-time victor in Lens. Let us know by dropping a comment below via our Facebook comment box. “The fans have been unbelievable, and we’ll keep fighting to try to qualify”.

Sturridge’s injury-time strike helped England secure a senstational win, as thrilling as it was important, over their British rivals.

“It’s tough but we’ve got another game on Monday so it’s a quick turnaround”, said Williams.

Ray Matthews said: “I’m very pleased England won but I can not see them getting beyond the quarter finals”. It was the last few seconds of a game that cost us, maybe we need to work a bit better on the ball and we go from there. We were so close so many times, but it took until the 92nd minute top score the victor.

Wales would also qualify for the last 16 by avoiding defeat to Russian Federation and Slovakia failing to beat England.

“At the end of the day we have three points from two games and we will focus on the next game and getting out of the group“.

Wales boss Coleman was inconsolable afterwards in the wake of Sturridge’s dramatic late victor with less than two minutes of stoppage time to go.

Daryl, who says he is cheering on both England and Romania in the tournament, having lived in the eastern European country for 11 years, said: “A draw would have been a fair result but I am glad England won”.

“But England got over it, conceding in the last minute against Russian Federation, and showed good courage to recover. Hopefully now we can go through”.

But he brought on Jamie Vardy and Sturridge at the break – and the changes proved inspired as Vardy levelled before Sturridge’s dramatic late intervention.

He said: “Everyone wants to be part of the starting line-up but it’s a team game and there are 23 of us who all want to play”.
