He’s been hammered by critics who claim he’s been too busy enjoying the party lifestyle.

Speaking at his press conference in the run up to Manchester United’s tie with Arsenal, Louis van Gaal revealed the moment he first laid eyes on Memphis, during his days as Netherlands boss.

“The first time I saw Depay was in the first year of my time as the national coach”, said LVG. But I said to my colleague, “He is a player, he can play” – and then, the next year, he scored 20 goals at PSV and was the most important man for them.

The Dutch winger has scored two goals in 20 Premier League games so far this season.

‘I’ve never been so close to crying after a match as I was today, ‘ said Romer, who was sent off in the closing stages. I have always defended him and I haven’t despaired that we wouldn’t see the real Memphis Depay. That does not give a player a lot of confidence and maybe that has affected him, but he still has time.

“That gave me the conviction that he can play at the highest level”.

Memphis spoke of how much the team enjoyed themselves against Midtjylland and is looking to take that same attitude into the Premier League game.

“On Thursday night he had a fantastic match but he also has to show that against Arsenal because Arsenal is another level”.

“But I didn’t give up on him – nor did I give up on Adnan Januzaj, because I recognise their quality and their talents”.
