Demichelis’ failings – and Rashford’s strengths – were no more obvious when the 35-year-old was left on his rear end as the teenager glided past him and on to goal.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game at the Etihad Stadium to see United close the gap on their fourth-placed local rivals to just one point. “Not necessarily”, he said, “but obviously we knew that was one of their weaknesses, with Marcus’s pace running in behind and he got his reward for it as well”.

Louis van Gaal says Manchester United’s chances of finishing in the top four this season rest in their own hands. Van Gaal, however, believes that this might be Lingard’s best position.

“Now it is in our hands”, Van Gaal said.

Guardiola is going succeed Manuel Pellegrini in summer.

Van Gaal signed a three-year contract in May 2014 but is not expected to see out the deal with fans unhappy with the style of play and poor results.

“I don’t think I’ve lost any control”.

City suffered a further blow with injuries to midfielder Raheem Sterling and keeper Joe Hart.

The first half ended in feisty fashion with players pushing and squaring off after Rashford fell under the reckless challenge of Demichelis, who somehow got away with the foul. Then, he underhit a back pass to Hart early in the second half, causing the goalkeeper to stretch to make a clearance and hurt his calf muscle.

Rojo was withdrawn after an hour against City, with the Argentine seeming to be really struggling with his fitness, while Darmian was also taken off after suffering an injury late on.
