But it added: “Other members do not reaffirm the Doha mandates, as they believe new approaches are necessary to achieve meaningful outcomes in multilateral negotiations”.

“Our work in Nairobi marks a turning point for the World Trade Organization”, US Trade Representative Michael Froman said in a statement.

The final draft, however, still reflects the deep divisions amongst the WTO membership on the issue of the reaffirmation of the Doha Development Agenda.

They were joined at the Opening Ceremony by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia whose country concluded its WTO membership negotiations on 16 December.

Kenya’s Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed said the summit would be “remembered as having made that leap” from a time when the WTO was divided along a “developed and developing divide”.
