The Soberanes Fire in Big Sur is the result of high humidity and low temperatures in Central California.

At least 14 homes were destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire in the Bitterroot National Forest in western Montana, authorities said Monday.

The Soberanos blaze north of Big Sur expanded to 59 square miles Sunday night, Cal Fire officials said.

More than 5,000 firefighters are battling a wildfire, which killed a man operating a bulldozer as it worked the fire line.

The fire threat, coming in the middle of the summer travel season, has prompted the closure of several popular California campgrounds and recreation areas along the northern end of the Big Sur coastline, including Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

The blaze has charred more than 6 square miles in Napa, Yolo and Solano counties since igniting Tuesday. The blaze continues to burn through a steep and rugged coastal terrain.

Fire spokeswoman Jennifer Myslivy said no evacuations were ordered.

Tod McKay, spokesman for the Bitterroot National Forest, walks by a burned truck and shop at Dave Campbell’s home in Judd Creek Hollow, Tuesday morning, August 2, 2016, in Hamilton, Mont.

Residents of about 30 homes in Cottonwood Creek and Fish Springs Ranch were warned they would receive 30 minutes notice to evacuate if necessary.

Fire crews were monitoring high winds and making headway Tuesday afternoon on a large blaze that started Saturday night in south-central Washington on the U.S. Army’s Yakima Training Center. Authorities say some fences were damaged, but no homes have been lost.

A huge California wildfire that has scorched around 43,000 acres, destroyed dozens of homes and left one person dead was started by an illegal, unattended camp fire, authorities have said.

Another fire broke out on Saturday in grass and brush about 48km northeast of Fresno, in central California.

In Bridger-Teton National Forest, a fire that has burned about 46 square miles was 84 percent contained. Dubbed the Cold fire, that blaze was listed as just 5 percent contained.
