While the two nations are still technically at war with each other, South Korean gymnast Lee Eun-ju, 17, and her North Korean competitor Hong Un-jong, 27, took the smiling snap together while completing some training together in Brazil.
Mike Covell added: ‘North Korea meets South Korea and they smile and take a selfie.
Political scientist Ian Bremmer re-posted the photo on his Twitter page, and it has since garnered more than 20,000 re-tweets and 20,000 likes.
David Skidmore was also excited by the image and wrote: ‘In what may be my favorite Olympic pic of 2016, these gymnasts from NORTH and SOUTH Korea pose for a selfie. This is why we do the Olympics. The conflict on the Korean Peninsula has lasted around 60 years, and tensions have been high in recent days, mainly because Pyongyang test-fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan.
