Even Without China, ‘Star Wars’ Nearly Tops ‘Jurassic World’ On Opening Weekend
With its Death Star-sized box office Friday in the US, the Disney film has now in just one day eclipsed the biggest “Star Wars” opening weekend, the biggest December opening weekend, and the biggest opening weekend for director J.J. Abrams. By Friday global ticket sales had reached $129.5-million as the movie set opening-day records in Britain, Germany, Australia, Brazil and other countries.

Ticket sales are estimated to have made $238m (£159.7m) – the previous record was held by Jurassic World, which took $208.8m in June. Disney, which paid more than $4 billion for Lucasfilm in 2009, had been downplaying expectations, but rival studios and industry analysts believe that “The Force Awakens” will open to $210 million or more.
“With incredible reviews and an excited hardcore fan base that will want to go back over and over again, “Force Awakens” will have long-term playability well into 2016 where it should earn the lion’s share of its potentially record breaking worldwide revenue”, Dergarabedian said.
Elsewhere, The Force Awakens opened to $US279 million as it played in every major market except China, India and Greece. By Disney’s estimates, “The Force Awakens” – the widest December opening ever with 4,134 theaters – blew past that number by Friday afternoon.
Everyone knows that the new Star Wars is going to make a lot of money.
Screenings of “The Force Awakens” started Thursday night in theaters across the US and Canada.
The opening weekend box office run by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is nothing short of historic. In North America, the film sold a record $100 million worth of presale tickets before Thursday previews began at approximately 7 p.m. EST.

The Force Awakens picks up the intergalactic story of good versus evil 30 years on from The Return of the Jedi, the last episode of the original trilogy. The movie lived up to the prodigious hype and acclaim from the perspective of the fan and from the critics alike and by the time you’re reading this, many have already seen the movie multiple times.
